The 'Laser Gateways' planned for Southampton have been scrapped.

New Forest protestors successfully argued that the proposed lasers – four beams of light stretching 15 miles from the clock tower in the Southampton Civic Centre – would create unacceptable urban light pollution in the New Forest National Park.

City councillors had said that the £250,000 scheme would bring a 'wow-factor' to Southampton, but they finally conceded defeat last week, blaming a lack of public support.
