The following announcement has been made by IFCA
“TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF
SHELLFISH BEDS BYELAW
Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the above
Temporary Closure of the wider Solent oyster fishery including
Southampton Water from: 1st November 2013 to 31 October
The Western boundary closure will be from Hurst Point to Fort
Albert on the Isle of Wight.
The Eastern boundary closure will be the eastern loxodromic line of
the former Sea Fisheries Committee District out to the Bay Closing
Line which runs from church rocks to approximately 350m South of
Selsey Bill at set out in Southern IFCA byelaws and up to the ttdal
limits within these boundaries”.
For those responsible fishermen, this is a great pity, but other river users have seen many examples of irresponsible and dangerous operation of clam dredgers in the area, especially in Southampton Water, and within mooring areas – where considerable damage has been done to moorings and boats. So for many Solent users, this announcement will be a great relief.
(And if anyone knows what a loxodromic line is,please let us know.)
